Perfectly Inelastic Collision Calculation



Perfectly inelastic collisions in one-dimensional motion.
Mass m moving at speed v₁ collides with mass km moving at speed v₂.
The collision is completely inelastic.
Velocity after the collision is vf.

k = 9.58
v1 = 8.47 m/s
v2 = -4.74 m/s
Calculate vf

Solution:
m v₁ + km v₂ = (m+km) vf
m (v₁ + k v₂) = m(1+k) vf
(v₁ + k v₂) = (1+k) vf
vf = (v₁ + k v₂) / (1+k)
